Silk painting is the process of directly painting on silk with the use of a resist. I first stretch the white Chinese silk on stretcher boards, draw on the silk with a resist pen. The resist is the consistancy of glue and when it dries, the paint can be applied and it will stay within the borders of the resist. It's like a barrier that contains the paint. The resists come in a variety of colors....such as gold, silver, copper and even clear. I personally use only silk paint, which is like watercolors but for fabric. I do not steam or use dyes and that is my choice. Either work great but I like silk paint much more than dyes.

"The title Master Silk Painter is awarded to those artists who have demonstrated remarkable skills, unsurpassed excellence and exquisite artistry in silk painting. This is the highest level of membership that can be obtained by an artist in SPIN (Silk Painters International), an international organization of silk painters. SPIN authorizes this artist to use the initials MSP after their name to indicate that in the eyes of their artistic peers and the world, the artist is a master silk painter."
